Trellises are one of our favorite design features of the kitchen garden. At Gardenary, trellises are one of the four main structures we include in all our kitchen garden designs.
Trellises serve both a practical and an aesthetic purpose in the kitchen garden.
Practically, trellises provide a strong structure for your vining plants to cling to and grow on throughout the season. Many fruiting plants have a vining nature including pole beans, cucumbers, and vining tomatoes.
Aesthetically, trellises provide a vertical structure that gives visual interest to your raised bed design and also provides a structural element, even when the rest of the garden may lie dormant in the deep winter.
After experimenting with many bamboo and wooden trellises and being disappointed with their tendency to collapse under the weight of the vines and their need to be replaced each season, Nicole Burke, founder of Rooted Garden and Gardenary, began exclusively using metal trellises in her kitchen garden designs.

Gardenary Trellises
Wide Pillar Obelisk Kit
This is the perfect obelisk for vining vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, or peas. This wide obelisk is constructed of solid steel rods with a powder coated black finish. The structure is topped with decorative finials and features flat steel horizontal bands.
Assembly required, but hardware is included.

Solid Steel Modern Arch Trellis
Arch trellises are great for connecting two raised gardens to one another across a pathway.
I love including arch trellises at the entrance of a kitchen garden to make the space feel like a special enclosure. There's something amazing about walking under an arch trellis into your kitchen garden area that truly creates the sense of a getaway.
Arch trellises are also great because they provide so much growing room for your vining plants. The plants can literally span from one side of the garden area to the other with the help and support of the arch trellis.
All the arch trellises here have been tested and used in our own Rooted Garden kitchen garden installations and have proven the test of time (and seasons of vining plants).
Diamond Lattice Trellis
This beautiful solid steel rod arch trellis comes complete with steel strip latticework infills, welded in position. 7 ft. high, 5 ft. wide. Solid steel assemblies fit together easily without tools.

Paris Arch Trellis
Upgrade your garden with these beautiful lattice metal trellises. Trellises stretch 5 feet wide and can be used to join two gardens together, as pictured here. Arches also come with 12" spikes so you can install directly into the ground if preferred. These arches are perfect for vining plants like peas, beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The pocket style installation allows you to assemble with no tools required.

Traditional Diamond Rounded Trellis
This arch trellis is perfect for a more narrow walkway through your kitchen garden space. The traditional shape and detailing on this unit create a welcoming look to any setting, while the graphite colored finish adds a bold hint. Diagonal rods within each side panel form a diamond-shaped lattice, and a matching piece at the top completes the item.

Obelisk trellises are perfect for growing vertically in the middle of a wide raised garden bed.
Obelisk trellises are generally larger at the bottom of the garden and then narrow as they go up. It's important to get obelisk trellises that are at least 6' tall; otherwise your vining plants will not be able to grow to their fullest extent before running out of trellis space.

Tower Obelisk
Add height and dynamic style to your kitchen garden with the Tower Obelisk. Placing an obelisk in your garden easily captures attention, while offering a healthy support for climbing plants. The four round legs on this dramatic structure extend upward, creating a pyramid-shaped frame.

Panel trellises are great to use at the back of a border raised garden.
Contemporary Panel Trellis
Squared metal bars form the significant frame, with three-dimensional rectangles within it. Flat metal slats hold these rectangles in place, and form a beautiful grid as well. The symmetrical pattern on the unit contrasts the curves within your shrubs and flowers, and the black, powder coated finish brings a modern hint to it.
